CHAPTER TEN

‘A COPY WON’T DO’

Jac didn’t feel the landing as he was too busy trying to stay on Kimi’s back and it wasn’t until Gabbi started to climb off that he realised they were on the ground. He slid off and heaved a huge sigh of relief when his feet touched the ground. If he never flew again it would be fine with him.

‘There’s his horse.’ Gabbi, not noticing Jac’s relief at being safely on the ground, pointed over to a horse that was tethered to a small tree by the edge of the woods. Marty was nowhere in sight though. ‘We’ll have to go after him on foot. We wouldn’t be able to see much through the trees from on Kimi’s back. Besides I don’t want Kimi anywhere near Ivan.’

‘That’s fine by me,’ Jac muttered as he started walking towards the trees. His legs felt like rubber but he kept going. Marty didn’t have much of a head start so they should catch up with him easily. He wondered why Gabbi wanted Kimi kept away from Ivan but he didn’t think it was the time to ask. ‘I think I know where he’s heading.’

Jac led Gabbi quickly through the forest. He began to wonder just what they were going to do when they caught up with him and he hoped that Gabbi had a plan. Jac held out a hand to slow Gabbi down just as they came near to the clearing he had seen Ivan in.

‘They were just up ahead yesterday,’ Jac whispered. It felt like much more than a day had past since he had last been here. So much had happened in such a short space of time.

Jac and Gabbi crept closer until they could see into the clearing. Sure enough Marty was standing in the middle, but he was alone. There was no sign of Ivan and only the charred circles of grass told Jac that this was indeed the same clearing. He began to wonder if Zora had found a way to stop the hole from growing yet but his thoughts were interrupted by a gasp of shock from Marty.

‘What was that?’ Jac hissed and Gabbi held a finger to her lips. A large area of smoke appeared in the centre of the clearing and Marty took several steps backwards.

‘It’s a travelling spell,’ Gabbi whispered back, so quietly that Jac barely heard her. ‘It only lasts a short while though and then you go back to where you started from.’

‘So he’s not really living in the woods?’ Jac muttered, wondering why he had ever thought such a powerful archmage would live rough in a forest.

‘You have the map?’ Ivan rasped, looking eager and excited, as the smoke faded away.

‘I do,’ Marty said coolly and waved his small satchel that was slung over his shoulder. ‘But I want payment first.’

‘Payment!’ Ivan laughed and it was a loud, rock crunching sound. ‘Let’s just say your life is payment enough.’

Ivan’s body seemed to grow taller and Marty took another step back.
